car accident injury

You’ve Been in a Car Accident, Now What?

Immediately following the accident…

After an auto accident, your body’s immediate response is to send blood to damaged areas. This will create painful inflammation of the tissues. Ice should be used to help control this inflammation. Use an ice pack as needed to help control your pain.

Apply the ice pack for 20 minutes at a time, using a thin layer between the pack and your skin. Wait at least 20 minutes before the next ice application. Decreasing inflammation in damaged tissues will help to limit the long-term effects of your injuries. This is NOT the time to apply heat.

If the ER does not give you an ice pack, stop by Complete Spine Solutions in Brookhaven or Tucker to pick up your FREE ice pack!

What is happening to your body, RIGHT NOW…

Whiplash causes damage to the ligaments of the spine. As a result of this damage, scar tissue will begin to form as the body starts the healing process. When scar tissue forms, it contributes to an increased likelihood of spinal arthritic degeneration.

Arthritic degeneration and scar tissue may lead to chronic pain in the future. Scar tissue is less elastic and less functional than the normal healthy tissues it replaces; it is also more pain-sensitive.

In order to reduce scar tissue formation and ensure the damaged ligaments heal properly, chiropractic adjustments to the spine as soon as possible after the injury are a necessary part of your full recovery.
